The Khanyolwethu Secondary School, with its more than a thousand enthusiastic students, was honoured last Friday at a function attended by the Minister for Education Mr Cameron Dugmore who officially opened their new Computer Laboratory. A ceremony
for unveiling of a marble plaque which was held in the large school hall, was also attended
by members of School's Governing Body, several Ward Councilors, Officials from the Head
Office as well as representatives from the several NGO organizations who supplied and participated in the setting up of the modern Computer Laboratory, which was described by Mr Dugmore as being the most modern in the Western Cape.
Visitors were welcomed by Mr A. Kayi, the Chairman of the Governing Body; and after
Opening remarks by the school principal, Mr H. Singh, guests were entertained by singing
and dancing of the school choirs and dancing troupes - as well as received by the delighted
children and guests.
In this formal speech, Mr Dugmore complimented Mr Singh and his Governing Body for the way the school enlisted the help and co-operation of the various Non - GovernmentalOrganisations in the Helderberg to assist them with the many desperately - needed items
required to run a well balanced school. Organisations mentioned were The Rotary Club of
Somerset West who supplied some of the computers as well as soccer goalposts, Mr and Mrs Andy Hawkins from Thembalitsha who were responsible for the many sturdy built - in desks on which computers were installed, Mr Goliath of the Khanya Project who also supplied computers, Mrs Sally Perry of ECHO, Mr & Mrs Kevin of the Boston College, Mr John Tholes and Associates of Edunova and Messrs. Swgers and Dan Kaas of AsIa
Magebu who all contributed to the success of the school. The Minister then addressed the
students directly and told them that he requires each and everyone of them to become More dedicated to improving themselves by working harder at their studies. He also
demanded better Matric results from them this year by them voluntarily extending their
studies to Saturdays and Sundays as well as on the upcoming public holidays. He pointed out that they will only be able to become part of the country's economy by studying and improving themselves through education. Amidst great cheering the ribbon to the new
Computer Laboratory was cut by Mr Dugmore to reveal more than 60 students hard at work on the computers. He showed great interest in the work the students doing asking questions as he went. This historical moment was captured by several photographers and the occasion will be treasured in the years to come as one of the most important stepping stones in the success of the Khanyolwethu Secondary School.
