Sustainable awareness Sessions

A series of six sustainability sessions was held by the Khanya East team. Principals and LAN administrators were invited to these sessions in which large amounts of information were distributed.

The workshop program was put together to showcase to schools what is available in terms of technology. Benefits of ICT at schools were highlighted.

The focus of these workshops was to emphasize the part of the Khanya vision that schools should ultimately take full ownership of IT equipment and its future sustainability. Schools were made aware of how to plan for the future when new becomes old equipment and maintenance becomes an expensive issue.

Participants during these workshops: Ingrid Graham, John April, Mark Williams, Andre Pietersen, Denric Blaauw, David Mathe, Ricky Esterhuizen and East team.

From a workshop point of view it was mostly a success. The efforts, however, do not end with these workshops. The real success would be when we see that the schools implement what they were shown. The team of facilitators are available to assist schools. It just depends whether the schools are willing to move. Amoy Khanya East facilitator

Macassar PS Community ICT Training Course

Earlier this year, Macassar PS under Principal, Mr Mark Williams, launched their first community involvement project – an ICT Course. Dexter Fischer was assigned to present the course and trained the participants with a very practical hands–on approach to ICT. It was very successful and the official photo appeared in the local newspaper
The second and third groups of participants attended their Certificate Presentation Ceremony after successfully completed two evening per week training session over a timeframe of three months.

The Deputy Principal, Chairman of the Governing Body, and the LAN (Dexter Fischer) and Albie Smith delivered a few words of wisdom as it was a very momentous occasion for all present.

Students, ages 9-19, form a team and recruit a teacher to act as coach. Once the coach enrolls the team, students work together to create an innovative website on any topic within a broad range of educational
categories
ThinkQuest inspires students to think, connect, create, and share. Students work in teams to build innovative and educational websites to share with the world. Along the way, they learn research, writing, teamwork, and technology skills and compete for exciting prizes.
Spurwing Primary entered an under 15 team and designed a website on Barriers to Learning. This website was evaluated by a group of international judges and published on the thinkquest library for learners , teachers and parents worldwide to use as an resource. This website was nominated as the second best (under 15) in South Africa.

Innovative Teachers South Africa

In the context of a teacher's school, learners or other circumstances the notion of innovation can have different meanings. A teacher in a school with few resources or large class sizes, say, can be said to be innovative if they achieve something that might be considered modest and normal in a school rich in resources or tiny class sizes. Context is everything.
Innovative actually means new but it does not mean new in an absolute sense. It especially does not necessarily mean highly technical. Innovation must be contextualised. Innovative means creative, different and new to the people involved.
The Microsoft Innovative Teachers Forum is all about sharing practice so Leading Innovation Practice needs to demonstrate that it is effective in a wide arena.
My Grade 7 Natural Science project was evaluated and found to be one of the top innovative projects in South Africa. I will have to present this project at the Microsoft office in Gauteng on the 20th and 21st of August 2008 where teachers will be selected to represent South Africa at the World Innovative Teachers Forum in Thailand in November.
